The Eighties see the collapse of traditional communism and the ending of the Cold War. The fragmentation of communism included the collapse of the Berlin wall and the breakup up of what was the USSR towards the end of the 80's., leading to German reunification.

The 80's also signaled a period of the rise of conservatism in political and cultural life, caused by Margaret Thatcher in the UK and Ronald Reagan in the USA .
Microsoft, IBM, Intel and Apple begin to have an impact on all our lives as small Computers become cheaper and more wide spread including home and Business. And we see the early beginnings of mobile phones as technology gets cheaper and smaller.
Famine in Ethiopia causes major music stars to band together to raise money and awareness organising the Live Aid concert.

Music in the 1980s was all about image and with the popularity of MTV, the imagesthat accompanied artists became more important than ever. MTV was the firstnetwork to exclusively showcase music videos, making its debut on August 1,1981. The first music video to be played on the channel was, appropriately, theBuggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star,"There were several new genres that popped up including, Hip Hop, New Wave andHair Metal, all of which have influenced music today.
